TMJ in Houston

TMJ can cause chronic pain in your jaws, neck and face, and can also cause headaches and difficulty swallowing. We diagnose and treat TMJ to provide relief for your symptoms and prevent future problems.

What is TMJ?

TMJ is the name given to chronic inflammation in the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that joins your jawbone to your skull. The soft tissues of this joint can become irritated, which over time causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness.

What causes TMJ?

There are several factors that can cause inflammation. Clenching or grinding teeth, stress, and bite alignment problems are common causes, but it can also be caused by chewing gum for long periods of time,or by health conditions like arthritis.

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis of TMJ involves finding the cause of the inflammation. We will examine your mouth and jaw, take x-rays of the area and review your eating habits and general health.

Treatment depends on the cause. Common treatments include medication, massage therapy, stretching or physical therapy, orthodontic appliances and surgery. Our team will discuss your treatment options with you to find the solution that works best for you.

Symptoms of TMJ include chronic pain, difficulty chewing or opening and closing your mouth and a clicking or popping sensation in your jaws. If you are experiencing these symptoms, contact our office to book a TMJ consultation.
